STORAGE TANKS & PIPES

The steel storage tanks on land are critical structures susceptible to geotechnical risks settlement, earthquake, corrosion and other mechanisms. In general, the most common and serious geotechnical risk is by differential settlement, brought about by poor subfloor preparation, excessive load, moisture penetration, etc.


​Failures by differential settlement tanks are closely related to the quality and control subsoil and depend on:

  • Tank fill level (hydrostatic testing)
  • Load capacity and soil compaction
  • Cohesion type
  • Layer thickness
  • Type of preparing the foundation and embankment (concrete ring or ground base)


Pipes or ducts are susceptible to breakage and leakage elements related to vibration problems, deformations, settlements, displacement, corrosion, fatigue, temperature and intrusions. Networks oil pipelines, gas, water can be monitored remotely beyond 200km in length evaluating the behavior of the pipeline and its possible deterioration with time identifying and locating leaks and possible damage caused by deformations, vibrations, settlements, changes of pre-stressed and torsions.


​​​​To reduce maintenance costs, protect facilities and avoid catastrophic failure and explosion in tanks and pipes, it is useful and important to perform periodic or permanent monitoring of:
